Sword for the Stage

Course Description

This course is a study in the use of rapier and dagger for theatrically staged combat purposes. In this class, 16th century European School of Arms technique and other period movement styles will be developed in a year long session. The course begins with practical training techniques for the stage combatant:

Safety
Balance
Eye contact
Distance

We will progress with the use of the singular rapier and then rapier and dagger together, including:

Stance
Footwork
Guard and parries
Offensive maneuvers
Cut and thrust
Beats
Pressures
Binds

Popularized by the works of William Shakespeare and the writings of Alexander Dumas, students will be given choreographed sequences to perform at the course’s conclusion.
